Ok, so you know that titanium is used for a myriad of products - titanium rings being our specialty. But titanium is also been used for many years in such applications as golf clubs, to build the space shuttle, airplanes, bicycles, boat parts, and even implanted in the human body. But I bet you never thought titanium would be used to make a DRESS!
Well check out the dress that made the cover of Playboy August 2007 issue. It is made of commercially pure titanium and Swarovski crystals. It's incredible! You can't buy anything like this at Macy's, that's for sure. (The model isn't bad either...)
Well this titanium dress really caught my attention because I've never thought of using titanium for apparel. But it can be done. It will never wear out, fade, rip or tear. But a titanium dress isn't for the inhibited woman because there isn't much left to the imagination.
The story of the titanium dress creation is pretty interesting. In a nutshell, it was created by Anthony Ferrara, renowned dress designer who uses metal mesh in his design. Here is his website: www.Ferrara-Mesh.com
Mr. Frerrara was contracted by Swarovski, the famous Austrian crystal manufacturer, to design and make two stainless steel metal mesh dresses using Swarovski crystals. The dresses were made and shipped off. They were amazingly beautiful. Mr. Ferrara was satisfied with his work. But Swarovski then asked for another dress. So Mr. Ferrara decided he had to do one even more spectacular than the first two. He chose to use titanium as the metal and then to add his signature color treatment when finished. Of course the Swarovski crystal was prominent as well. As part of the agreement, Mr. Ferrara would receive back the dress after Swarovski was finished with using it for their promotion in Europe.
Several months later when the dress returned to it's designer, it was displayed in Las Vegas at a fashion garment trade show. A hip clothing boutique in Hollywood purchased the dress for an undisclosed price and put in on display in their shop. This store sells lot's of Anthony Ferrara's metal mesh clothing and accessories. Next, a stylist came into the shop and rented the dress for a photo shoot for Playboy. And wa-la, you see the magazine cover. Just recently this amazing titanium dress was sold to a private party. Sale price was not disclosed, but me thinks it's in the $10K range. Which really isn't that expensive considering it's a one of a kind piece - you won't find another anywhere. Anthony Ferrara actually told me he wouldn't make another one, no matter what someone might be willing to pay. Gotta love that.
